what is the latest machine that is used in the medical field?

As the question implies, there are now different machines used in medical purposes like the ultrasound, x-ray machines, MRI, etc... So what is the latest invention used today in the medical field? please explain its uses, who invented it? and any significant informations about the machine.

  1. The newest machine used in the medical field is the 3-D ultrasound, allowing you to see your child from all angles of the womb. Medical imaging is a process by which physicians examine and evaluate an internal part of the human body for either diagnostic or research-related reasons. Images are made by means of equipment based on a range of different technologies or ‘‘modalities.’‘ Chief among these modalities is radiology (i.e. x-ray imaging), the first modality developed for medical imaging. Other modalities are computed tomography (CT), ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and nuclear imaging. The origins of medical imaging can be traced back to 1895 when Wilhelm Roentgen used a cathode-ray ray tube to make the very first radiograph, an x-ray image of his hand. Use of x-rays as a diagnostic tool grew steadily thereafter for not only detection of bone fractures and breaks but also cancerous tumors, respiratory diseases such as tuberculosis and black lung and a variety of tissue abnormalities. Not until the 1970’s did a new modality emerge, computed tomography. Computed tomography is a noninvasive, diagnostic technique where numerous x-ray images are taken from different angles and then combined by means of a computer to yield a three-dimensional image of any part of the body. This requires digitalization of x-ray images in place of film, a major trend in the medical imaging market, which is giving rise to a host of ancillary technologies involving image storage, retrieval, transmission, analysis and visualization. The 1980’s saw the introduction of still another modality, magnetic resonance imaging. Unlike traditional radiology and computed tomography, MRI uses a magnetic field, radio signal and computer in place of potentially harmful x-rays. The MRI scanner is a tube surrounded by a powerful, circular magnet. A patient lying on a movable bed is rolled into the tube where a strong magnetic field aligns hydrogen protons, which are bombarded by radio waves. This makes the protons spin, which produces a faint signal that is acquired by the scanner and processed by a computer to yield an image. While less risky than x-ray images, MRI images have less resolution. Moreover, unlike x-ray images which identify different densities within the body, MRI images distinguish between tissues based on their water content, thus providing a unique contribution to the field of medical imaging. A variant of MRI is MRS, magnetic resonance spectroscopy, which is used to detect changes in metabolism produced by degenerative diseases. Another altogether different technique or modality is ultrasound. Instead of utilizing x-rays, radio signals and magnetic fields, medical ultrasonography uses high frequency sound waves between 3.5 and 7.0 megahertz. These sound waves are reflected by tissue at different rates, producing a 2D image viewable on a TV monitor. Compared to CT, MRI and radiographs, ultrasound has a lower image resolution.
