Fun Kitchen Gadgets for a beginner cook.?

I want to buy some fun kitchen stuff for a niece learning to cook. Things like a character waffle iron or one of those sandwich thingies that makes a pocket sandwich. Any suggestions on items that make easy, fun food that can be nutritious? She is able to make hamburger helper and pancakes so far.

  1. The waffle iron is a good idea, and it will come with a cookbook that tells you how to make way more than waffles with it so don't bother with the sandwich maker. Invest in good quality cookware and good knives and show her how to take good care of her stuff. Nothing takes the place of a good knife and pans. The silicone stuff is great too, as are those silpat mats. The Rachel Ray for kids cookbooks are great for beginner cooks because they are casual and written in a way kids can understand and the recipes are really good.Teach her the proper way to chop an onion and garlic, how and when to salt pasta water, how to use a meat thermometer, how to mix and match herbs. The possibilties are endless. Nothing can take the place of good equipment and quality time of someone showing her how and letting her try. You are a good auntie!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Except get rid of the hamburger helper-it's full of sodium and preservatives! Show her how to make it without the box!
  2. You can't think of anything to buy on your own? You're the one who wants to be a cook. Buy a sharp knife, eat it, they taste good.
  3. Get a neat cookbook, they make beginner cookbooks. This will help her get the basics, the other stuff will be fun for a while but will eventually not be used anymore.
  4. Melon baller - best thing ever....especially since you can use it like a mini ice cream scoop... Also, mini gadgets are cool - like mini spatula, and mini whisk....and they come in awesome colours!
  5. microplane
