  1. knee wraps, gloves with straps, olympic belt, ipod, sweat cloth (flannel) My wife bought all these for me, I use them all at the gym, AND I was really pleased she did, I use them all at the gym
  2. A good pair of running shoes or walking shoes.
  3. There are tons of little gadgets to take to the gym--my favorites are a good water bottle, a towel, an mp3 player, and a heart-rate monitor. Okay, the first two aren't gadgets, but they're necessary (and actually, Target carries a "smart" water bottle that's supposed to be able to tell you how much to drink, what you've drunk, etc.). A good mp3 player is good for those who, like me, get distracted by the person next to them or the TV, or need music of their own choosing to help push them through their workout. The iPod isn't the only (or best) option, but it's a favorite. I've got a SanDisk that has amazing battery life, a radio tuner, and I can upload movies and pictures to it, too. A heart rate monitor is good for cardio fitness--at the basic level, they tell the wearer his heart rate in real time. This helps the exerciser to monitor his activity, to know when he's working too hard, or not enough. I've seen models that tell you how many calories you're burning, come with a stopwatch and lap/elapsed time timer, predict heartrates, and measure VO2 max levels. Prices can range anywhere from $30-$400, so you've really got a lot of options with these. Outside of these options, it really depends on what you're boyfriend is into. There's tons of stuff designed particularly for people who do free weights, swim, yoga, ellipticals--it all depends, really, on what he likes! I'd go to a sports store and just browse their fitness sections. You'll find tons of stuff. Good luck!
